Research program 2015–2018

The research program is outlining the areas that the traditional calls address. The program is updated every three years. Right now we are in the program period 2012-2014. Traditionally the program is divided into seven areas, which are described below along with the objectives for each one of them.

1. Values of fire protection measures 
 

Objective: The objective is to develop tools to evaluate the usefulness of measures protecting against fire, not least to compare the measures to deal with everyday accidents and measures to address larger and more complex accidents.

2. The interaction between people, technology, organization and society.
 

Objective: The objective of this research is to generate knowledge about the complex interplay around the onset of fire and its consequences. This includes how the individual may be affected by and how he or she behaves in case of fire and also how the interaction between human behavior and various technical systems can affect the incidence and impact of fires. Additionally, how various organizational and social contexts affect both the occurrence and the consequence of fires is also included. The knowledge should be applicable in models, methods and in measures to create an effective fire protection in different parts of the society.

3. Fire in buildings
 

Objective: The objective is to develop solutions for a better fire protection with fewer injuries and less property loss.
Important research areas include safety measures in complex facilities, underground facilities such as tunnels, cultural and historical buildings, impact on infrastructure in transport of hazardous material and the development of evacuation procedures, especially for people with various disabilities.

4. Fire protection in transport
 

Objective: The objective is to improve fire safety in transport. Interior materials, active and passive protection systems, alternative fuels and evacuation of mass transportation vehicles are all key areas. Work focuses primarily on larger road vehicles, rail vehicles, or car and passenger ferries.

5. Active Fire protection systems
 

Objective: Active fire protection systems include detection, extinguishing and fire-fighting equipment, fire gas ventilation and modeling of them. The goal is to build on the design rules that exist within BBR (the Swedish Building Regulation) and develop performance based design for active fire protection systems. The work is based on theoretical and experimental knowledge of fire dynamics, detection, extinguishing agents and extinguishing effect and control of fire spread.

6. Fire Protection and Industrial Risk
 

Objectives: The basis for the industry is constantly changing and hence the focus on the research needed. Brandforsk has a long history of research on industrial fires. A lot of effort has been undertaken in previous programs, but more work is required to prevent or limit the effects of fires in industrial plants. Moreover, there is a particular need to bridge the gap between application in industry and academic research. Translation of new knowledge to work tools and advice, instructions or recommendations in order to assist in solving practical fire protection problems in industrial processes and facilities in an efficient way is therefore a priority.

7. Fire and the environment

Objective: The impact on environment and health must be reduced. New technology and new materials need to be developed to create an eco-friendly fire protection. Research efforts should describe pros and cons of environmental choices that affect fire safety and also to show how different instruments can be used to support efficient fire protection which considers environmental effects. This research should encourage the development of models to evaluate environmental impact and new products and solutions that maintain fire protection levels while lowering the environmental impact.
